Surviving Christmas
2018 EDIT: Whilst I note that the blogs I'm currently pushing out as fledglings from the five-year-old 'nest' are somewhat of a festive flavour, and I'm publishing them in the height of summer, I thought I'd better get them all over and done with on the same day. Over-indulgent? Yes, but it's my blog and I'll do what I like. You don't have to read it (and probably nobody is.) ;)
NINTH BLOG 27/12/13
Well, that’s almost it for another year - did you survive it? Christmas, I mean.
Food, crackers, silly hats, booze, the usual soap dramas, blockbuster movies, some Disney Pixar thrown in too, nearly falling asleep in front of the TV, then getting a second wind (and third, and fourth, if you know what I mean *parp*). Classic old British TV movies - Porridge, Dad’s Army, then plain old classics like The Titchfield Thunderbolt, The Wizard of Oz, and Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang (all of which - in total - I watched about an hour of, with The Wizard of Oz getting the lion’s share with half an hour).
Staring down at your expanding girth and vowing to get back in shape, just as soon as you’ve finished that tub of Twiglets/crisps/hummus/
leftover goose/turkey/ham/cake/pudding/chocolates (and why wasn’t there a whole bowl of Eton Mess just for me? I can’t get enough of meringue, cream, and strawberries). A crazy amount of excess, like we’re never going to eat again (or we haven’t eaten for a month). A seemingly never-ending round of visits and visitors - exhausting but lots of fun. The ‘Now That’s What I Call Christmas’ CD must surely have been removed from the CD player in most houses/shops/pubs now? For sanity’s sake for everyone.
Pork pie, Champagne, smoked salmon - have always been my family’s Christmas breakfast. Does anyone else have this on the morning of the 25th December? Or are you more the Cadbury’s Selection box or a big fry-up type? I think this originates partly because my Mum is from Rothley in Leicestershire, and they always had a ‘Walkers’ pork pie from Melton Mowbray (just down the the road). The smoked salmon and Champagne - well, it’s a party day, isn’t it?

I hope you managed to avoid any arguments, bad weather, bad jumpers (although there seems to be a trend in ‘ironic’ Christmas jumpers this year, which I must admit have made me smile), and you have made it through to the other side (mostly) intact.
Here’s wishing you all the best of New Year’s Eves - whether partying wildly (I’m so over that now I’m in my forties) or watching the fireworks on telly with your hot chocolate - and maybe a little champagne - which sounds much more my style these days (could you guess?) I’m looking forward to interesting adventures over the next twelve months (all on UK soil) and will hope to share some of these with you - oh, and maybe I’ll actually get round to setting up my business!
